After comprehensive renovations and modifications, the Albertinum now greets the public anew with artworks spanning from the Romantic period to the present. The invitation to tender led to a spectacular proposal by the Berlin-based architectural firm, Staab, which enabled reconstruction without the loss of viable structure.
A steel lattice covers the inner courtyard, forming a bridge that now carries the new 60 metre long and 2,700 tonne two storey workshop and storage area. The central room of the existing four-winged facility remains unaffected. This technically and aesthetically unique solution not only keeps the art high and dry should the Elbe flood again, it has also created a multifunctional, top-notch inner courtyard.
