“Otto der Große” reigned over 1,000 years ago and founded the first Holy Roman Empire of German Nation. He let Magdeburg, with the construction of the Imperial Palace, whose remainder is still under the cathedral place, become a European metropolis, whose significance was equal to that of Aachen, Konstantinopel or Rome. The tomb of the “1. European” is located in the cathedral of Magdeburg St. Mauritius and St. Katharina. Further “evidence of stone” from several centuries can be seen along the “Straße der Romanik”. Since 2009, the year of the 800th anniversary of the cathedral, there is also an excavation site, where the bones of Editha, his beloved first wife, were buried.
