There is simply no better view of the Taunus und die Rhein-Main-Region than from atop the Grosser Feldberg Mountain. At 879 m, the unwooded summit is the highest mountain in the Taunus region. Both the summit and the 12 m-wide Brunhildisfelsen, a cliff mentioned as early as 1043, provide a view of Frankfurt, the Main Valley and the Odenwald Forest to the southeast, the Rhine River to the west, the Hintertaunus region to the north and the Vogelsberg Mountain to the east. Several of the Feldberg's slopes are used as ski pistes in winter and the annual Feldberg Turnfest Festival has been held atop the summit since 1844. The large Feldberghof Restaurant and the 72 m-high Grosser Feldberg tower, which can be seen from a distance, are also located at the summit. The tower was constructed shortly prior to World War II as a television transmitter; the Kleiner Feldberg tower (40 m) was built back in 1901. Hesse's oldest falconry with more than 60 birds of prey is also located here. The Taunus ridge trail and the Flensburg-Genoa European long-distance hiking trail both pass over the Grosser Feldberg mountain.
