Visitor's Guide

The towers of the cathedral (known as the Dom), which are visible from far, the Marienkapelle (Marien Chapel), Neumünster and Käppele, along with the old bridge on the Main (Mainbrücke) and the Marienberg Fortress lend the characteristic look to the city. And artists such as Tilman Riemenschneider, Balthasar Neumann and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo have left their mark everywhere with their works.
The highlight is the residence of the princely bishop, the "castle of all castles". Balthasar Neumann, the architect and genius of the baroque era, created this excellent construction in the 18th century, which is listed today as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fürstbischöfliche Residenz (Residence of the Prince-Bishop)

The Fürstbischöfliche Residenz in Würzburg is considered to be the main work of southern baroque and is at the same time one of the most important castles in Europe. It gained entry into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1981 itself. The Residenz was built between 1720 and 1744 in accordance with plans given by Balthasar Neumann. The unique staircase room, a unique, free standing trench construction, reveals the genius of Neumann, who was probably at the beginning of his career at that time. The foundation stone was laid by Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, the brick shell was completed under the Prince-Bishop Friedrich Karl von Schönborn.
A large number of outstanding artists worked on the interiors, among them the stucco artist Antonio Bossi and the most important fresco painters of the time, the Venetian Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, who created the world's biggest coherent fresco in the staircase hall. Today, parts of the Residenz are used by the university and by the Martin von Wagner Museum.

Fränkische Weinland (Franconian Wineland)

Granted: You can ride a bicycle and walk almost everywhere. But rarely can you do it in such beautiful surroundings and in such a relaxed manner as in the Franconian Wineland. What makes it so? First of all we have the richly varied landscapes that invite you formally to take part actively. Steep vineyards alternate with soft rolling meadows, narrow river valleys contrast with densely forested highlands. Just experiencing this bewitching natural landscape at close range, through all senses, step by step or on the bicycle is more than worthwhile in itself. But it is actually the unexpected discoveries along the route that constitute the unique charm. The Franconian Wineland is rich in history and culture, there is plenty to see and wonder at. Historic old cities with timber framed structures and lively market places, magnificent churches, fortresses and castles. The Franconian Wineland is inspiring in every aspect: both for the mind as well as for the body.

The Stein Wine Trail
