Nymphenburg Castle

The extended baroque complex in western Munich was built as the summer residence of the Bavarian Prince Elector. Besides the extensive castle complex, the impressive ensemble of baroque castles also has a range of important collections.
The artistic interiors and the much admired gallery of beauty of King Ludwig I. make the castle one of the most popular sights in Munich. The castle museum also includes the place where King Ludwig II was born and the multi-storied banquet hall with the gorgeous ceiling frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The park with its stock of old trees, the numerous waterways and the concealed park fortresses invite the visitor to go off on a journey of discovery. Also worth a visit are the Marstall Museum and the porcelain collection, the Museum Man and Nature and the Botanical Gardens in the immediate vicinity. Nymphenburg was a gift from the Prince Elector Ferdinand Maria to Henriette Adelaide to celebrate the birth of the successor to the throne: the starting point of a glorious baroque creation which was then implemented by the successor to the throne, Max Emanuel himself. He added to his mother's country villa by symmetric additional constructions, making it an extensive and pleasant castle complex. Driven by the ambitious Prince Elector, his courtly artisans, brought in mainly from France and Flanders worked at a feverish pace in 1715 on the expansion of the Nymphenburg and the Schleißheim Castle.

Neuschwanstein Castle

The fairytale castle of King Ludwig II. - with more than 1 million visitors every year. King Ludwig II. had the castle built in 1868. The Regent, a dreamer, wanted to turn Richard Wagner's stage world into reality with this fortress. Eduard Riedel was responsible for planning the castle. The foundation stone was laid in 1869, from 1874 onwards Georg Dollmann was responsible for the construction. The interiors were largely completed by 1886, the year in which Ludwig II. died. In 1892 the construction plans were completed by Julius Hoffmann. The castle is located 200 m above the valley, on a jagged cliff. The castle has been open to the visiting public from 1 August 1886, not even a month after the death of King Ludwig II.
