The artists' village of Worpswede is 28 km from Bremen, in the lowlands of the River Hamme, in the middle of the "Teufelsmoor" (German for Devil's Moor). Paula Modersohn-Becker is the most famous of the Worpswede artists. Even today, Worpswede draws artists and artisans. They live and work there and exhibit their works at exhibitions and in galleries. Other places worth a visit are the Barkenhoff, the former residence of Heinrich Vogeler, the Haus im Schluh which has a gallery and hand weaving loom, the Alte Molkerei (Old Dairy) and much more.

The inhabitants of Bremen call their Freimarkt, which is held in the last two weeks of October every year, the "fifth season". The biggest popular festival in the northern part of Germany is held between the main railway station and the Bremen Trade Fair area, just round the corner from the hotel: colourful carousels, eatery stalls with hearty fare as well as sweet titbits, beer tents and much more herald fun filled evenings in a convivial atmosphere.
