Some 2,000 years ago, even the Celts had got iron ore from the hills of the Kellerwald, which was found out by studies conducted on the metallic tools of those times. At the Besucherbergwerk Bertsch, there is a 20 km long pillar system that is offered in the guided tours. Since the 16th century copper was mined here, and even today various semi precious stones are found here, mainly the famous Kellerwald-agate. The gem polishing stretch in Bergfreiheit makes jewellery. Over the centuries, however, the mining of iron ore determined the mining operations. Besides this, there is a hammer mill that can be visited in Bertsch, which was used earlier to crush the stone before the metal was melted out of it in the numerous smelting works.
